mark twain delivered this speech on june 9, 1909, at the graduation ceremony of misses tewksburys school in baltimore, maryland. frances nunnally was graduating and he had promised to attend her graduation. they met on board the minneapolis during twains 1907 trip to england to receive an honorary degree from oford university and she became a member of his aquarium club. twains brief remarks at her graduation was his last public speech.

i dont know what to tell you girls to do. mr. martin has told you everything you ought to do, and now i must give you some donts.

there are three things which come to my mind which i consider ecellent advice:

first, girls, dont smoke -- that is, dont smoke to ecess. i am seventy-three and a half years old, and have been smoking seventy-three of them. but i never smoke to ecess -- that is, i smoke in moderation, only one cigar at a time.

second, dont drink -- that is, dont drink to ecess.

third, dont marry -- i mean, to ecess.

honesty is the best policy. that is an old proverb; but you dont want ever to forget it in your journey through life.

To some extent, university students are capable of studying by themselves, but more often than never, we find ourselves at a loss as to choose good books to read and appropriate topics for our research. It is clear that we need some advice from our teachers. If our teachers can lecture more on how to learn by yourself for us, especially for the freshmen, our skills will be further improved.

Second, more activities should be conducted to make our campus life more colorful. I餸 sorry to say that the present life on campus is quite boring. Every day we have classes, read in the library, or stay in the dormitory. Life here is routine. We need more meaningful activities organized to enrich our college life and enable us to study more efficiently.

guilin, the small city is unique and like a water color painting, especially a chinese painting. i want to actualize my potentiality to add to its color.

Is It Up to Students to Evaluate Teachers?

The past few years have witnessed a mounting number of universities allowing students to evaluate their teachers and even decide if they can stay on their positions or this practice,peoples attitudes differ considerably.Some applaud it warmly whereas others criticize and even condemn it harshly.

Proponents of the practice may list the following reasons.In the first place,they assert that students are the people who know the most clearly about the teaching performance of a teacher,so they should have the say in evaluating him or her.In the second place,they contend that students have paid for their education,so they have the right to decide which teacher should be employed.

Opponents,however,point out that it is dangerous to leave the right to students to evaluate teachers.For one thing,students may not know what ought to be taught and how it should be taught;they may only judge a teacher according to his temper and even accent or appearance.For another,in order to please students,some teachers may resort to some improper means.

Personally,I believe that both views are justifiable,and we should achieve a balance between them by employing the evaluating approach in a reasonable and beneficial be specific,students should be allowed to evaluate their teachers,but they may not be the only decision-maker in the teachers fate.
