For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or homes for the aged. 贵州省黔东南州丹寨县78%的人口属于苗族，短短的十天里，除了每日的快乐课堂，我们还利用放学时间走访了很多家庭。这些家庭大多是小孩父母外出打工，家里只有老人和小孩，甚至很多老人七八十岁了还要照顾四五个孩子，家里的日子过得十分艰辛。留守在家的老人们虽然没什么文化，可他们都说，要让孩子上大学，去看看外面的世界。
她曾经有个幸福的家
贵州省黔东南州丹寨县龙泉县展良村一座苗族传统的两层小楼，空荡荡的大房子里如今只生活着祖孙两个人，11岁的陈云和74岁的奶奶。孤零零的冬天，空寂的房屋让人忍不住感叹着寂寞，感受着凄凉。
这座两层的房子是几年前建成的，那时的陈云有一个非常幸福的家庭，爸爸、妈妈、妹妹还有奶奶一起过着甜蜜的生活。
但这一切，因为两年多前的一场矿难而支离破碎。
陈云的爸爸不幸在矿难中丧生，让这个原本幸福的家庭瞬间被击溃，爸爸去世后不久，妈妈就带着妹妹改嫁他乡，然后去了广东打工，改嫁后，就再也没有再回来过，前不久，妈妈还打来电话说要在今年六七月份把五岁的小女儿送回来，给奶奶抚养。

陈云在学习上非常用功，上课表现积极，她喜欢读书，语文成绩很好，不过数学和英语就不是很理想。当地不重视英语的教学，一周也就一节英语课，而且小升初的考试也没有英语，学校英语老师用着非标准的英语教着她们难以理解的英语课。为什么学英语，有什么用？她不知道。
在“快乐学校”上课的几天里，她每天早上早早地赶到教室。快乐课堂上的陈云有些沉默，很少说话，要么看书，要么闷头做着课堂笔记。她总是很认真地将志愿者老师的板书记在本子上，反复学习。她在下课没人的时候，也会偶尔找到老师请教一些问题。
考虑到中午回家比较远，志愿者们中午带她一起去当地的镇政府食堂吃饭。坐在一起吃饭时，陈云依然很少说话，不过她却主动帮志愿者盛饭、夹菜。

留守儿童更需要关爱，他们从小就缺乏家庭教育，而学校教育也不能带给他们更多的心理辅导，所以，大学生志愿者要做的更多的是和那些孩子们交心，只有心与心的交流，才是最真诚、最需要的。
